Retailing Market in Germany

Retailing in Germany recovered well from the 2009 recession in 2010, posting commendable value growth, and in 2011 this favourable trend continued. After two particularly strong years, the already mature market inevitably slowed down to just 1% current value growth in 2012, as renewed fears of a eurozone economic crisis damped consumers’ confidence. Nonetheless, retailing still performed better than the real GDP growth in Germany in 2012, indicating a relatively stable purchasing pattern for consumer goods. Positive value growth was seen across grocery, non-grocery and non-store retailing, although the number of outlets experienced a stronger decline in 2012 compared with previous years, mainly due to the bankruptcy and subsequent closure of thousands of outlets of the leading parapharmacy/drugstore chain, Schlecker, in 2012.

Retailing Market in China

Overall, retailing in China remained vigorous in 2012, with double-digit current value growth. The central government’s emphasis on domestic demand to boost the economy through stimulus packages has been translated into dynamic retailing market movement, particularly explosive growth in internet retailing, as well as buoyant homeshopping, direct selling and mixed retailing, in addition to the steady development of grocery retailers. The retailing market in China is highly fragmented. Owing to the boom in internet retailing, leading internet retailers, such as taobao.com and 360buy.com, have experienced explosive growth in sales revenue and quickly risen to the top 10 position in the retailing market over the review period. An extensive range of products for sale, convenient home delivery service with efficient logistics facilities and extremely competitive prices are key factors in their rocketing growth.
