Egyptian Travel and Tourism Market 2018

The Egyptian economy is heavily dependent upon the tourism industry which has suffered greatly in recent years due to civil unrest and a number of foreign countries advising against all but essential travel.

The turbulent aftermath of the political revolution of 2011, which saw Egypt caught up in the broader Arab Spring movement and brought to an end the rule of Hosni Mubarak, continues to cause disruption to the country’s travel and tourism sector. However, whilst the social and political recovery of 2012 have again collapsed into turmoil, a new period of improvement since July-August 2013 has seen leading market intelligence provider

The Cost of Revolution

The initial cost of 2011’s revolution to the travel and tourism sector was a decline in international arrivals by 33.2%, precipitated by the unrest and the negative image of the country this presented through global media. This was not, however, to be the extend of the damage done by the social and political upheaval of the Arab Spring, with the marginal improvements made in 2012 to inbound tourism soon being shattered by Mohamed Morsi’s ousting from power by the military in July 2013. With the perpetuation of uncertainty regarding Egypt’s social and political landscape, this saw further decline in its tourism industry.

Such detrimental consequences for Egypt’s travel and tourism sector had a substantial impact on the fate of the nation as a whole, as tourism is a major contributor to the Egyptian economy. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), the sector’s direct contribution to GDP was 6.9% in 2012, whilst its total contribution was 15.1% of GDP; it has a similar impact on the nation’s employment figures. As such, the Egyptian people as a whole suffered the decline in its travel and tourism industry, with tightened government purse strings and a deficit of employment opportunities – especially for those between 15 and 29, who constituted more than 70% of the unemployed during 2013 – having major consequences for the country.

Return to Fortune
With the sociopolitical turmoil dissipating, or at least settled down, many countries – such as Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands – lifted their ban in travel to Egypt. This is key for the recovery of Egypt’s travel and tourism sector: with 91.1% of inbound trips to the country being for leisure travel, the country must seek to project an image of safety and stability if it is to recover to pre-revolution levels of success in its travel and tourism sector.

The prime route to such success for Egypt will likely lie in its cultural and heritage tourism. The country is home to seven UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the Pyramid fields from Giza to Dashur, and Nubian Monuments at Abu Simbel and Wadi Al-Hitan. Its cultural and archeological heritage is attractive to tourists worldwide, and continued work – such as the decade long renovation of the Pyramid of Khafre – continues to strengthen Egypt’s tourism sector. This is no surprise to the Egyptian authorities, who continue to bolster the range of impressive tourist attractions, such as the soon-to-be complete Grand Egyptian Museum, which is expected to generate a significant amount of tourism, in addition to 15,000 jobs. However, key to the country’s return to a prosperous travel and tourism sector relies on more than just museums and a rich history; it also relies on a safe and stable present.
