Travel and Tourism in Hong Kong to 2017

Domestic and outbound tourism in Hong Kong has recovered after a brief decline due to the financial downturn in 2009. International arrivals to the country registered healthy growth between 2008 and 2012. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), in 2012, tourism contributed 18.5% to the country’s GDP, and accounted for 16.2% of the total employment. In 2011, the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) launched the promotional campaign ‘Asia’s World City’ to create more awareness of Hong Kong as an attractive tourist destination.

Domestic tourist volume increased from 749,036 trips in 2008 to 841,332 trips on 2012, expanding at a CAGR of 2.95%. Domestic tourist volumes are expected to increase at a CAGR of 3.03% to reach 976,899 trips in 2017. The key growth drivers over this period will be improved economic conditions and government initiatives to promote domestic tourism.

Inbound tourism also increased, between 2008 and 2012, as the number of international arrivals increased from 17.6 million to 23.8 million, expanding at a CAGR of 7.78%. Inbound tourist arrivals are expected to reach 33.2 million in 2017, at a CAGR of 6.89%. The key drivers of this growth are improved economic conditions in key source markets and promotional initiatives to present Hong Kong as an attractive tourist destination.

The outbound tourism is expected to increase from 31.2 million in 2012 to 33.0 million in 2017, increasing at a CAGR of 1.11%. The expansion in air transport capacity to key outbound destinations and an increase in disposable income will support this trend.

Hong Kong’s air traffic volume, both domestically and internationally, has continues to rise. Passengers carried reached 55.7 million in 2012, having expanded at a CAGR of 4.24% between 2008 and 2012. The number of passengers carried is expected to increase at a CAGR of 3.18% to reach 65.1 million between now and 2017. Total revenue is also expected to increase from HKD135.2 billion (US$17.4 billion) in 2012 to HKD175.0 (US$22.6 billion) in 2017, recording a CAGR of 5.30%. The acceleration of growth over this period will be driven by expanding tourist volumes and air capacity.

The economic slowdown in 2009 adversely affected Hong Kong’s hotel market as it recorded an 11.2% decrease in total hotel revenues. However, the market value expanded at a CAGR of 11.58% between 2008 and 2012, due to recovery in tourist flows in 2010 and 2011. Hong Kong’s hotel market posted an increase in revenue from HKD33.8 billion (US$4.3 billion) in 2012 to HKD45.2 billion (US$5.8 billion) in 2012. Total revenue is expected to increase at a CAGR of 5.07% to reach HKD57.9 billion (US$7.5 billion) by 2017, with an expected increase in tourist volumes.

Travel and Tourism in the Czech Republic 2017

The World Economic Forum (WEF) ranked the Czech Republic 22nd in terms of tourism competitiveness in its travel and tourism competitiveness Index for Europe in 2011. However the nation was ranked first in terms of the presence of large car rental companies, 10th in terms of the quality of its transportation networks, 16th in terms of the volume of world heritage sites and 17th in terms of the quality of its air transport infrastructure.

Domestic tourist flow on the rise

The total number of domestic trips by Czech residents increased from 20.4 million in 2008 to 30.0 million in 2012, recording a CAGR of 10.09% during the review period. Leisure was the leading motivation for Czech domestic tourists, accounting for 20.6 million trips, equivalent to a 68.7% share of total domestic trips taken in 2012. Business accounted for 2.0 million trips, equivalent to a share of 6.6%. The number of other personal domestic trips − which includes study, sport and medical trips and pilgrimages − recorded a CAGR of 12.36% during the review period. Moreover, the number of domestic overnight stays by Czech residents stood at 109.1 million in 2012, an increase of 10.4% over 2011.

The majority of tourists visiting the Czech Republic stay in hotels and motels, while the remainder stay in unpaid accommodation, such as the houses of friends and relatives. The country’s capital, Prague, remained the most popular destination for both domestic and foreign tourists in 2012, while other regions in the country are relatively unexplored.

Czech Republic’s total tourism output declined

The country recorded a 1.6% increase in its direct tourism output in 2012, following a decline during the previous three years. Overall, the nation’s total tourism output declined at a CAGR of -3.41% during the review period. Economic recovery in key source regions such as Europe and North America was the primary reason for growth in 2012.

Inbound tourist expenditure impacted by global economic conditions

The Czech Republic recorded a total of 9.2 million inbound tourism trips in 2012, an annual growth of 5.0%. Germany was the primary source country, accounting for 1.9 million inbound trips, followed by Russia with 834,225 trips. In 2012, leisure trips accounted for 83.7% of international arrivals, with a total of 7.7 million tourists. Total inbound tourism expenditure recorded a CAGR of -4.86% during the review period, to reach CZK111.9 billion (US$5.7 billion) in 2012. This decline was primarily attributable to a decrease in inbound tourist traffic from key source nations due to the global financial crisis.

Recovery of outbound tourist expenditure

Outbound tourist expenditure increased by 3.5% in 2011 and 1.4% in 2012, as a result of a period of global economic recovery.
